Staying Organized Has Never Been Easier
I’ve got some good news for you – staying organized is much easier than getting organized. To keep things in good order indefinitely, follow these six easy tips.
1) Put it Away, Don’t Just Put it Down – This is the staying organized Golden Rule. Resist the temptation to just drop it on the desk – make sure you put it in the place you’ve designated for it. Just the couple of extra seconds it takes to put in back in it’s place will save you time in the long run.
2) One Item In, One Item Out – If a new item comes into your home, one older item should be tossed, donated, or sold.
3) Make a Place for Everything – Find a logical “home” for every new item–and keep it there.
4) Seasonally, Do a Clean Sweep – Four times a year, with laundry basket in hand, take an inventory of your house and garage. With each item ask yourself:
Is this useful now, or is it likely to be in the near future?
Does this item hold significant importance to me?
If the answer to both questions is “no,” then you should probably discard, sell, or donate the item. Repair the things that need repair and return them to their proper places.
5) Police Your Closet — Everything in your closet should pass this 3 question test:
Does it fit?
Is it in good condition?
Is it in style?
If any of your clothes items fails one or more of these tests, sell it, donate it, or toss it. If your weight tends to fluctuate and you’re pretty sure you’ll be able to fit into an item later, keep it in a separate section or another closet.
