What Are US Government Grants?

Citizens of the United States of America can apply for a government grant. These government grants are lawful money that are granted to those who require them and are basically funds given away by different government authorities, corporations, departments, foundations, etc. These grants are financial benefits that are made available by the administration to those individuals or groups who meet the criteria set up for these grants. Many free government grants go unclaimed every year for several reasons because individuals are not aware that these grants are easily available to them.

Many types of organisations and groups are eligible and can apply for these government grants. Some of them are: – Various government establishments like State government, City or Township Governments, special District Governments, etc. – Education organisations like Independent school districts, Private Institutions of Advanced Education, Public and State Controlled Institutions of Higher Education. – Public housing organisations and non profit organisations. – Profit organisations like small businesses that meet the size criteria that the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has set forth.

Apart from the above named groups, individuals can also apply for grants provided by the government. If they do so, then they will be able to sign up only on their behalf. With that, when one applies as an individual, one is allowed only for those government grants that are open to people. Presently, over nine hundred grants are being issued by 26 federal bureaus in the United States.

Grants are broadly divided into four main types. Project grants – are those, which are granted to individuals on a competitive basis. These grants are given to individuals who conduct scientific research, assist educational goals, welfare works, various technological developments, healthcare, arts concerned projects, etc. Formula grants – are used for people who need employment-training and those finding it hard to raise a family. Categorical grants – are grants, which are employed for several reasons like urban forestry assistance, hazard abatement project and other specified projects. Block grants – are grants in which a big sum of money is given to state or lower government bodies with particularized terms on how they should be utilised.

Either you should be a U.S. citizen over 18 years of age or you should be a resident alien if you want to apply for and claim government grants. It is only if you meet these criteria will you be able to avail a copy of the grant application package, fill in the application and submit it.
